Josiah L. Claghorn affadavit, 1908 July 24.

Affadavit stating that on 18 Mar. 1863, on the Winters plantation near Port Hudson, La., an old slave came into the 116th Regiment's lines wearing an iron shackle, and that Claghorn and another soldier cut the shackle from his right ankle on board the Steamer Sally Robinson. Claghorn also states that part of the shackle, in his possession since it was cut off, was sent on 6 June 1908 to Henry E. Stambach, secretary of the 116th Regiment Association, Buffalo, N.Y., for donation to the Buffalo Historical Society. The affadavit is signed by Henry A. C. Schwartz, Charles W. Wall, and W. H. Bartlett. all of Erie County, N.Y., witnesses to the cutting of the shackle. The affadavit is notarized by J. A. Kelso of Seattle, Washington.
